Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
New research indicates that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
